Renovation Design of the Outdoor Environment in the Old Residential Communities in China: A Review from the Perspective of Creating Shared Spaces for the Old and the Young

Abstract

China is massively renovating its old urban residential areas. The outdoor space is a vital element for old residential community renovation. The perspective of creating a shared outdoor space for the old and the young is emerging. This paper conducted a systematic literature review to understand the current works regarding shared space for the old and the young in China. This review first categories definitions and classifications of the old and young. And the majority of relevant research mainly concentrates on the indoor environment, the architectural design for the elderly or children, the outdoor environment, and product design. This paper reviews the studied design methods, principles, and strategies for creating shared space for the old and the young. There are some statements and recommendations regarding creating shared space for the old and the young in old residential neighborhoods. However, it seems some are inconsistent. Currently, it seems the perspective of shared space for the old and the young in old residential communities is still a relatively vague concept, there is a lack of established common understanding of it. It seems there are also a few available implications. It is hoped the results of this review will be helpful in improving awareness and understanding of creating shared space for the old and the young in old urban residential areas in China.
